Chapter Ten

Edwin had no recourse but to pen his feelings on parchment. He’d tried, unsuccessfully, to sleep. The moon was already dipping lower in the night sky. Dawn would be coming within the next two hours. If he had fancied himself in love with Rachel before, he was much more so now. What man could sleep when he was in love?

For the first time in his life, he hated the fact that he hadn’t been born in a noble household or, at the very least, in the home of a wealthy middle-class gentleman and lady. There was nothing he could bring to a marriage with Rachel. He was only the butler, and while that was a good place to be among the household staff, it wasn’t good enough to be her husband.

As she’d said, London had rules. That meant everyone had their place. One couldn’t step outside their bounds. Whether right or wrong, everyone was stuck with the position they were born in.

All he could do was write down what he’d tell her if he had the freedom to be her suitor. He didn’t leave anything out. Now he understood what had compelled him to write that first missive. It had been more than simply wanting to assure her that she was desirable. It’d been the only way he had been able to let her know that he found her desirable. Except he had kept his identity a secret. That had been a mistake since all it’d done was threaten to expose him. This time, he would be smart about things. He would never show this to her. He would keep this missive in his desk.

The action of writing everything down helped to settle his swirling emotions. Afterward, he managed a couple of hours of sleep before he had to get up and tend to his duties. His master was the first one to come down the stairs. Edwin was always anxious whenever Rachel showed up in the drawing room, and he was even more so this morning.

As of late, she’d taken note of him and smiled when she saw him, but this morning, she walked up to him. “How are you doing today, Edwin?”

Aware that her brother looked up from the paper he’d been reading, Edwin told her, “I’m doing fine, Lady Rachel. And you?”

“All things considered, I’m all right.” She glanced at the tea. “Thank you for bringing tea in here.”

“I was only doing my job.”

“I know, but you always put a hint of lemon in my cup, and I appreciate that.”

Her brother arched an eyebrow.

Edwin gave her a smile to show her he appreciated the compliment. “I better check to see if breakfast is ready.” Then he hurried out of the room before he got in trouble with her brother for talking to her.
